I will never forget the young woman who was told that her unborn baby would be a “monster.” “Don’t think your God is going to perform a miracle,” the physician warned in a parting shot.

The baby was delivered a few months later, a perfectly formed, normally functioning child. The specialist quietly shed tears when she saw him – tears of joy, not grief.

Why is a human life so valuable that only God Himself can decide who lives and who dies? Here are four reasons.

  1. We are made in His image for fellowship with Him.
  2. We are saved for all eternity by our personal acceptance of Christ’s death and resurrection.
  3. We are told that God has planned each day of our life before we even began to breathe.
  4. God offers us a future life in Heaven with Him.

In the light of God’s value of human life, and with an appropriate fear of God when He warns about the dire consequences of those who hurt children, added to His commandment against killing, it seems appropriate at this time of our history as a nation to have a section of this website dedicated to life issues. Years ago I wrote a book called Life on the Line which covered various areas of bioethics, such as abortion, rationing of health care, refusal of treatment, doctor-assisted suicide, and euthanasia. Later I wrote a booklet Before I Die which can still be obtained from Lutherans for Life. After such writing I have always gone back to more encouraging writing. But as the dilemmas increase which relate to the value of life and to health care, I find I cannot just turn my head the other way. And so I am establishing Life Lines, with the prayer that God will use it as He wishes.
